Be inspired and inspire others to repair the world! The Diller Teen Fellows is a pluralistic, international, youth leadership fellowship currently active in 32 communities in North America, Israel, Australia, England, Argentina and South Africa. Twenty teens from the greater Los Angeles area are selected yearly based on their leadership aptitude, commitment to Jewish learning, interest in exploring their connection to Israel, and passion for serving their community. Fellows participate in monthly Sunday workshops, three weekend retreats, two single night overnights, a 10-day peer hosting of a Diller Teen Fellow from our sister community, Tel Aviv, and a three-week trip to Israel in the summer. The Fellowship is open to high school sophomores and juniors. Applications (by current freshmen and sophomores) are accepted in the spring. Teens from all Jewish backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
The Fellowship year begins in August/September and runs for 12 months. The cohort is announced in May/June each year. Applications will be available in Spring 2019.
In order to create well-rounded future Jewish leaders, Diller staff and fellows build programming that focuses on six core values:
Programming around these themes includes group discussions, workshops, conversations with community leaders, group work on projects, experiential service learning, international partnerships, Shabbat experiences, and more.
Fellows commit to:
Diller Fellows come from different backgrounds but are joined together by the desire to:
If you share these desires then the Fellowship may be for you!
Diller Teen Fellows are challenged to develop and refine their relationship to Israel through many parts of the programming, included but not limited to experiential education, meaningful programming with the Tel Aviv Diller Teen Fellows, a three-week Israel trip, and home hospitality with Tel Aviv counterparts in Los Angeles.
The Israel trip is unique in that it affords Fellows an opportunity to tour Israel while also exploring current events. Fellows spend a full week in Israel living with their Israeli peers and doing meaningful community service in the Tel Aviv community. Fellows also spend time meeting and getting to know other Diller Fellows from 32 communities around the world including the U.S., Canada, South Africa, England, Argentina, Australia and Israel.
Candidates must submit an application online along with two recommendations (from a teacher, mentor, peer, no reference letters from family members will be accepted) to be considered for a group experience session. The application period will open in the Spring of 2019. Notify me when it opens.
Group experience interviews will take place in April. Final decisions will be in May.
Fee for participation is $3800 which covers all participation including the Israel portion. Financial aid is available on an as-needed basis. Each fellow is generously subsidized by the Helen Diller Family Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.
The Diller Teen Fellows family is funded by the Helen Diller Family Foundation, a supporting foundation of the San Francisco Federation’s Jewish Community Endowment Fund.
